CORONAVIRUS SURGE: OVER 14,000 NEW CASES Health officials in China’s Hubei Province — the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak — reported the largest single-day infection rate to date on Thursday, identifying 14,840 new cases and 242 more deaths. The figures, 10 times the previous day’s reported infections, come as Chinese health officials have expanded how they diagnose those who show symptoms of the virus, called COVID-19. [HuffPost]

SENATE DEMS DEMAND BARR RESIGN OVER STONE CASE Senate Democrats have called on Attorney General William Barr to resign or face impeachment after President Donald Trump appeared to confirm that Barr had intervened in the case against the president’s longtime friend Roger Stone. “Donald Trump is shredding the rule of law in this country,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) tweeted. “Barr should resign or face impeachment.” [HuffPost]

MARIE YOVANOVITCH RECEIVES DIPLOMACY AWARD Marie Yovanovitch, the former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine who was smeared by Trump during the impeachment inquiry, received an award for her excellent conduct in diplomacy. In accepting the Trainor Award at Georgetown University, Yovanovitch deplored the decline of U.S. diplomatic and moral leadership. [HuffPost]

DAD ACCUSED OF ABUSING STUDENTS AFTER MOVING INTO DORM A New Jersey man accused of moving into his daughter’s college dormitory and abusing her roommates is facing federal charges, including sex trafficking, extortion and forced labor. Lawrence Ray, 60, appeared before a Manhattan judge after being accused of exploiting and abusing at least five Sarah Lawrence College students on and off campus over eight years. [HuffPost]

MNUCHIN GRILLED FOR 'DOUBLE STANDARD' Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin denied he is a toady for Trump, but failed to explain why Treasury gave Senate Republicans potentially damaging financial information related to former Vice President Joe Biden’s son Hunter, but blocked a Democratic request for Trump’s tax returns. 112-YEAR-OLD JAPANESE MAN DECLARED WORLD'S OLDEST Chitetsu Watanabe, at 112 years and 345 days old, has just been declared the oldest living man by Guinness World Records. Watanabe, of Niigata, Japan, was awarded the honor after the death of fellow Japanese citizen Masazo Nonaka, who was 112 years and 266 days old when he died on Jan. 20. [HuffPost]





HOUSE DEM: AIPAC IS A HATE GROUP THAT WEAPONIZES ANTI-SEMITISM Rep. Betty McCollum (D-Minn.), accused the influential lobby group American Israel Public Affairs Committee of being a hate group that weaponizes anti-Semitism to silence dissent. Last month, AIPAC started running paid Facebook advertisements with pictures of McCollum, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.). [HuffPost]


The Culinary Workers Union recently posted flyers inside employee areas of casinos and hotels warning that Sen. Bernie Sanders would end the union’s health care program if elected, through his Medicare for All proposal. The message could potentially damage the front-runner in the upcoming Nevada caucuses on Feb. 22, since the union has tremendous reach. [HuffPost]

GOP REP AGAIN ACCUSED IN OHIO STATE SEX ABUSE A former captain of the Ohio State University wrestling team told members of the Ohio House Civil Justice Committee that Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) was not only aware of allegations of sexual abuse that took place at the university in the 1980s and 1990s, but that he begged others to cover up his involvement. [HuffPost]
