ALISON VAN PELT JAMES PERSE RESORT 13 – ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE
This season, James Perse takes you into the living and work spaces of LA artists.
Alison Van Pelt was born and raised in Los Angeles and studied art at UCLA, Art Center, Otis Parsons and the Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy. Inspired by the photorealists of the 1970s as well as the abstract expressionists, Van Pelt developed a style described as blurry hyperrealism. Beginning with a meticulously hand-drawn and painted portrait, she obscures the figure with layers upon layers of softly brushed paint rendering an image that appears as though it were photographed through a mist. This process is a race against drying paint as Van Pelt often works for 24 to 48 hours without sleep.
Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the world including Southern California's LACMA, The Armand Hammer Museum, The Orange County Museum of Art and the Long Beach Museum.
