More Mondays: Meet Maru

Ever since Maru was a puppy, he struggled with stomach and other GI-related problems causing severe diarrhea and major discomfort. In addition, in September 2020, Maru was diagnosed with cryptococcosis, an invasive fungus that primarily affects the central nervous system and ocular (eye) structure in dogs. Maru’s MRI results revealed that his case was extremely severe.

At his lowest point, when there was inflammation affecting his brain and spinal cord, he was lethargic and restless at night. As the disease spread through his body, Maru had trouble breathing and was left completely blind in his left eye. Despite the bleak prognosis, Maru was a fighter. With the severity of his condition and uncertainty of his lifespan, pet parent Christine wanted to make sure Maru was receiving the most nutritious diet to fuel his fighting spirit. 

After discovering JustFoodForDogs through her vet, Dr. Connie Kim at West LA Veterinary Group, Christine consulted with Maru’s internist and neurologist, and they agreed to start him on the Chicken and White Rice Recipe. Not only does Maru look forward to mealtime, his diarrhea and upset stomach are a thing of the past! While cryptococcosis can have lifelong effects, a fresh whole-food diet has given Maru the strength to continue to fight. 

It has been 5 months since Maru’s cryptococcosis diagnosis. Despite what his future holds, he continues to live life fully – chasing waves at the beach and sneaking extra snacks when Christine isn’t looking. Additionally, thanks to excellent medical care, Maru is currently receiving an effective oral medication that has temporarily stabilized the spread of the fungus.
