Resources on How to Parent More Intentionally

The Power of Positive Parenting

This email is dedicated to highlighting opportunities to enrich and continue to develop our children's character and abilities over the summer as we exemplify good leadership and provide their needs.

Our children have been home since March and we have all had a glimpse of hope that things would return to normal allowing them to engage, attend summer school or camps, and get out of the house. While states are slowly reopening, the anxiety of a COVID-19 resurgence and the safety of relaxing social distancing is a concern for many parents. Now what?

Let's start with you! You may know by now that I specialize in Positive Psychology. I would like to introduce you to Positive Parenting as a resource for your parenting philosophy (and a way to help you and your kids do your best, stay sane, and be well).

So, what exactly is positive parenting you might ask. Positive Parenting is the continual relationship of a parent(s) and a child or children that includes caring, teaching, leading, communicating, and providing for the needs of a child consistently and unconditionally. Positive Parenting helps children to develop autonomy by using effective communication and rewarding and encouraging positive behaviors.

Here are some examples of Positive Parenting from PositivePsychology.com:

  • Choosing to be a good role model and example of behavior, communication, and acting with love and empathy
  • Setting appropriate and healthy limits, and boundaries
  • Keeping in touch with our own reactions and adjusting so we respond lovingly and with empathy instead of knee-jerk reactions spurred from a place of anger, irritation, impatience or frustration
  • Praising the behavior we want to see in our children

Tips for Surviving Burnout

Morning routines with children can be a challennnggggge, coupled with the uncertainty of a pandemic; you may have a recipe for mental exhaustion. Positive Parenting Solutions offers alternatives for yelling, reminding, and nagging, providing you with strategies to survive the morning routine (read more here) .

For parents who are on the brink of burnout, outside of a virtual hug, I recommend this New York Times article to discover preventative measures and ease your stress. The article describes burnout as "a distinct psychological phenomenon that is separate from parents feeling generally stressed and exhausted." The tips range from loosely creating structure to considering mental health when making decisions.
