The Four Agreements: Watch The Replay!

“We have the need to be accepted and to be loved by others, but we cannot accept and love ourselves. The more self-love we have, the less we will experience self-abuse. Self-abuse comes from self-rejection, and self-rejection comes from having an image of what it means to be perfect and never measuring up to that ideal.  Our image of perfection is the reason we reject ourselves; it is why we don’t accept ourselves the way we are, and why we don’t accept others the way they are.” ~
Don Miguel Ruiz, The Four Agreements

Here is our pick for the week! The Four Agreements, by bestselling author Don Miguel Ruiz reveals the source of self-limiting beliefs that rob us of joy and create needless suffering. The four agreements are listed below with a quote from the author.

The Four Agreements
1)  Be Impeccable With Your Word: “If I love myself I will express that love in my interactions with you, and then I am being impeccable with the word, because that action will produce a like reaction. If I love you, then you will love me. If I insult you, you will insult me. If I have gratitude for you, you will have gratitude for me.  If I’m selfish with you, you will be selfish with me.” ~

2)  Don’t Take Anything Personally: “Nothing other people do is because of you. It is because of themselves. All people live in their own dream, in their own mind; they are in a completely different world from the one we live in. When we take something personally, we make the assumption that they know what is in our world, and we try to impose our world on their world.  Even when a situation seems so personal, even if others insult you directly, it has nothing to do with you.  What they say, what they do, and the opinions they give are according to the agreements that they have in their own minds.”

3)  Don’t Make Assumptions: “Gossiping has become the main form of communication in human society. It has become the way we feel close to each other, because it makes us feel better to see someone else feel as badly as we do. There is an old expression that says, ‘Misery likes company,’ and people who are suffering in hell don’t want to be all alone.”

4)  Always Do Your Best: “You can only be you when you do your best. When you don’t do your best you are denying yourself the right to be you. That’s a seed that you should really nurture in your mind. You don’t need knowledge or great philosophical concepts. You don’t need the acceptance of others. You express your own divinity by being alive and by loving yourself and others.”

This was a topic we discussed during a previous Weekly Wednesday Lunch and Learn. We appreciate everyone who has joined us over the past few months. Michele and I are making room for exciting opportunities, and have decided to switch to monthly Lunch and Learn coaching and conversations.

Moving forward, these will be held on the first Wednesday of each month at 12:30PM. The next Lunch and Learn will be on August 5th. You can catch up on all the replays here.
In next week's Lunch & Learn, we will be talking about racism in Corporate America and addressing the issues during these challenging times. Vanessa Phipps is the Founder & Principal of The Future Force Group, LLC as well as the President of The New Jersey Chapter of the National Association of African Americans in Human Resources.

Choosing “the road less traveled” has become a metaphor for those people whose actions show a willingness and the courage to break from conformity and make choices that, although beset by unexpected bumps and unfamiliar challenges, will create an even better road for the future. This is the walk that we must take in Corporate America today to break patterns of racism in employment practices.
