California's slide from coronavirus success to danger zone began Memorial Day

The seeds of the latest surge in coronavirus cases in California appear to have been planted around Memorial Day.

Businesses began reopening at a rapid clip, and people decided that after months at home they would attend holiday parties and, later, graduations and Father's Day celebrations. Then there were the widespread protests over the killing of George Floyd. Within a few weeks, COVID-19 cases were surging and hospitals were filling up.
