What a year - what a decade

Dear friends,

Another year and indeed another decade has come to pass and it feels like an appropriate time for reflection.

Ten years ago we were still very much a start up, a young company and brand. 2010 was a year of great progress, after a somewhat difficult 2009, when we attended BaselWorld for the first time and had to convince hesitant distributors and retailers that Linde Werdelin was something out of the ordinary with our watches and attachable instruments for skiing and diving.
Between 2010 and 2015 we grew faster that we could run and we came up with our now well known families of Spido and Oktopus and experimented with materials such as titanium grade 5, ALW and 3DTP Carbon while modifying movements into Moon phases, Double Dates and skeletonising chronographs, etc.
2015 was the beginning of great structural and cyclical change in our industry which we responded to accordingly to stay ahead. Over the next few years we launched an in-house pre owned service as the first watch brand to do so (now others are following), we introduced customisations of both new and existing pieces and a made-to-order production which ensures that we always make one less watch than is desired.

2019 was a year of accelerating activity and initiative at Linde Werdelin.  We introduced six new series across our three families. The watches are very much in the tradition of Linde Werdelin and a reflection of our combined passion for horology and our universes.

We also introduced the Linde Werdelin Explorer programme and partnered in two important mountaineering expeditions. Leo Houlding, whose Everest expedition in 2007 inspired the original SpidoLite, led an incredible adventure into the Guyana jungle to climb the super vertical Roraima mountain. Rupert Jones Warner climbed the Annapurna mountain as the youngest British climber ever.
On a more prosaic level we rebuilt the core of a new more exciting and complete website experience, expanded our service programme and moved to our new home in Holland Park, London. We welcomed a number of new colleagues to our growing team. All in all a very good year for us to build our future into the next decade.

One of the highlights of the year for me personally was our inaugural explorer trip to Scotland in a couple of Land Rover Defenders 110’s with tents on the roof. Our good friend Kristian Haagen joined from Copenhagen and we spent four days exploring the northwest coast and isles of Scotland. Driving the best part of 500 km we saw some of the most beautiful and remote nature in Europe and camped on the coast high above the waves of the Atlantic.

As Christmas and New Year beckoned I went to the mountains and, as lovely as it was, I was reminded how much damage we do to our planet and the very direct impact it has on these beautiful mountains. The snow cover was minimal, and still is, with temperatures being too high and rainfall/snowfall being unpredictable. The glaciers recede every season, with their disappearance eminent.
We have long had the planet and climate in mind when we think about production and how we conduct ourselves. Over the last few years we have moved towards a more sustainable and circular model of operating. I have found that it is a long and challenging process and very much a mindset, where practically every decision taken needs to include that view. We are still not quite there, but are very much working on it and will soon announce our progress and intentions in this area.
2020 will be a year of delving yet deeper into our universes and the many things we are working on will hopefully be what you would expect from us as well as positively surprise you. I believe in staying true to our heritage while also experimenting and developing our personality.
I wish you a happy and prosperous 2020 and may the year (and decade) bring you much skiing and diving!
