Hi there,

We hope this email finds you. We’re finding wildness where we can, which is mainly in books and occasionally on walks and sometimes via Briana Venskus’ TikToks. This email is best read while listening to “Wide Open Spaces,” by the Dixie Chicks.

If you want to read something that will transport you, but is dangerous enough that you aren’t super tempted to take on the same epic journey:

  • You could start at the iciest ends of the earth aboard The Endurance, by Alfred Lansing. He follows the doomed but dogged Shackleton expedition as they navigate out of a disastrous attempt to cross the South Pole.
  • If you hate the cold, you could pick up Amazon Woman, Darcy Gaechter’s telling of her experience kayaking from the head of the Amazon to the open sea.
  • In a tributary of the same basin, you could accompany Teddy Roosevelt, who led a madcap post-presidential river expedition up the River of Doubt

If we were on a river adventure with Teddy Roosevelt:

  • We would wear a sun-reflecting, odor-repelling top and adjustable camel-colored pants. We would bring plenty of sunscreen and bug spray and send elegantly worded telegrams home to our loved ones.
  • Actually, now that we’re thinking it through, these pants might make more sense on the river voyage: pockets are handy, the fabric is light, and the color would keep our spirits up. Thoughts?

If you want nature writing without the human element:

  • You could try The Hidden Life of Trees. The title sums it up well, but the writing gives you the sense that you’re on a walk with an informative Santa Claus in an old-growth forest.
  • For something more nautical, there’s always Rachel Carson’s remarkable work, The Sea Around Us

If you’ve never heard of the dumbo octopus:
