Is breastfeeding really cheaper than formula feeding

It's a common misconception that breastfeeding is cheaper than formula feeding or that breastfeeding is free.

Though it is true that putting your baby to your breast is free, the costs related to breastfeeding are not.

Here are some of the things breastfeeding mamas need and their estimated costs. Note that some of these are not required, but may help moms to have convenient breastfeeding sessions.

Aside from those, the most valuable resource a mama spends during breastfeeding is her TIME.

The Actual Cost of Breastfeeding
I Did the Math. Breastfeeding IS a Second Full-time Job.

One Mama from this blog post said:

"My baby is now almost 11 months old.  At this time, I’m pumping around 2 hours a day, or three 40-minute sessions.  The average pumping or breastfeeding session is 15-60 min, up to 8 times a day, so my pumping time is still an average amount of breastfeeding time, although I had days in the past where I was pumping a total of 3 or 4 hours a day.

At the time of writing this, my baby is 9 days away from 11 months old, or 40 days away from her first birthday (approximately 80 pumping hours at current pace).  My pump reads 1669 hours and 44 min.  At current pace, I will have pumped at least 1,750 hours by my baby’s first birthday..."

She mentioned that this does not include the other activities she does related to breastfeeding like nursing her baby (approximately 20 mins up to 8 times a day for 6 months, which is another 487 hours), researching about breastfeeding, attending breastfeeding classes, nursing moms’ gatherings, lactation consultations, and organizing, thawing, or traveling to get supplemental breastmilk, and many, many more.
