Did you know that one of the most common breastfeeding questions is how much moms should eat while breastfeeding?
Everyone is different but generally, it's recommended for a breastfeeding mom to consume an extra 300-500 calories per day.
Some breastfeeding moms experience extreme hunger while others feel like they don’t have much of an appetite.
We like to remind breastfeeding moms to "eat to hunger" and "drink to thirst." Listen to your body! It's important to have a balanced dietand pay attention to things you eat and drink(examples: caffeine, spicy foods, etc.) to see how these are affecting your baby.
Tip: Grab a quick and healthy snack to nibble on while you breastfeed.
Here are some of the best foods for breastfeeding moms:
1. Nuts & Seeds
2. Low-Sugar Greek Yogurt
3. Whole Grains and Cereals
4. Fresh Fruits & Vegetables
5. Healthy Fats such as canola oil, olive oil
6. Fatty Fish such as salmon
7. Avocados
8. Olives
As much as possible, try to avoid unhealthy fats such as saturated and trans fats.Saturated fats are present in high-fat meats, whole milk, tropical oils, butter, and lard. Trans fats can be found in partially hydrogenated oils.
