Sight words are high-frequency words that often involve irregular spelling, making them tricky for children to decode using phoneme-grapheme sound correspondences.

Because these words are so common, stumbling across them can slow down children’s reading. This is why literacy experts recommend that children learn them by heart. Automatically reading these words in texts leaves children’s brains free to decode words with more regular spelling and to concentrate on what words mean.

The two most common high frequency word lists are the Dolch list and the Fry list containing over 1300 words. However, contemporary literacy experts advise that children should only learn about 200 - 300 high frequency words by heart and the rest they should learn to decode.
Generally, children are expected to master around 50 high-frequency words in Reception and 100 words during the Year 1.

Our Foolproof Sight Words printable workbook covers 200 sight words taught in Kindergarten and K-Grade 1 helping children learn through fun activities like colouring, word search and puzzles. It provides easy to follow instructions - you don’t need to be an expert!

"My 6 year old enjoys the puzzles. It's good that you can print out the sheets as you need them. Just about to print out another lot for this week!"- Felicity L.

"My son is really enjoying learning and revising the tricky words but most of all, the technology associated with the books is awesome. He loves the fact you scan the QR code and he hears the sentence. So innovative." - Fadzai.
