Oris takes Center Stage for its marine conservation efforts
Rick MacPherson is awarded 2013 Sea Hero of the Year and Dive Against Debris receives matching grant.
real watches for real reople - it is what defines us and what we do. As members of the global environment and as a company that is successful with our diving watches, we feel it necessary to help take action with regard to the ocean Environment. In 2013, that action has come through our continued sponsorship of Scuba Diving’s Sea Heroes program and a new marching grant made to Project Aware’s Dive Against Debris. Both were awarded at the recent DEMA show in Orlando.

The Sea Heroes program was started in 2011 as a way of supporting and recognizing individuals who were making positive contributions to the marine environment. Rick MacPherson received this year’s top Sea Hero honor for his work with the Coral Reef Alliance, the only international non-profit organization focused strictly on coral. As CORAL’s conservation programs director, Rick worked to build a global team of local conservation leaders that raise awareness in local communities and implement best practices to promote long term sustainability around coral reefs. 2013 Sea Hero’s also included Gwyn Mills, Kemit-Amon Lewis, Troy Bodden, and Jessica Cramp. A $10,000 matching grant was also made to Project Aware’s Dive Against Debris program. Project Aware is a worldwide, non-profit organization that was started by the PADI diving society, and facilitates several conservationist programs including Dive Against Debris. This program is a voluntary effort among divers to continuously remove trash and debris from the ocean. Individuals and dive centers organize clean-up dives and record their findings. The program raised approximately $60,000 Year to date and cleaned up over 96,000 pounds of ocean debris. Click here to check out some of the photos from clean-ups around the world during the “month of action” in September.

We, as always, thank our Sea Heroes for their tireless efforts, Scuba Diving Magazine and all of the divers from around the world who participated to help make Dive Against Debris a success.
