The gut and immune system connection
The immune system, which helps fight against the flu and other viruses, is affected by many factors in the body. One important factor that affects how your immune system works is the gut microbiome, these are the bacteria and other organisms living in the digestive tract. A big part of the immune system lives in the gut. The gut microbiome helps with teaching the immune system about which types of bacteria are harmful, and those that are not, so that it can target the harmful microbes from the food we eat and fight viruses like those that cause colds and flu. It’s important to understand that when your gut is not balanced, it can lead to ongoing inflammation, which weakens your immune system, making it easier for you to get infections.
