In recent years, Día de los Muertos – thanks to social media and pop culture creations like Disney’s “Coco” – has captured the imagination of people far beyond Mexico's borders.

The holiday combines the Western European traditions of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, with ancient Mesoamerican rituals for honoring the deceased. The tradition originated in southern Mexico more than 3,000 years ago; when the Spaniards arrived on the scene, they tried unsuccessfully to eradicate the holiday, as it did not align with their religious beliefs. Notwithstanding their efforts, the celebration survived and indeed is stronger today than ever, having gained a truly worldwide following.

As most know, Día de los Muertos is not a day of mourning, but of joyous celebration. Fundamentally, the day acknowledges death as an integral part of the human experience. It honors the lives of deceased loved ones; by remembering them, the departed can awaken (albeit briefly) from eternal sleep to share food, drink, and celebrations with the living.

One of the most visible traditions of Día de los Muertos is an altar, or ofrenda, honoring deceased loved ones. These altars are typically displayed in family homes, cemeteries, and  public spaces.

Recreo’s spin on the tradition is to create an ofrenda each year that honors the life of an artist or designer. This year, fittingly, we honored Georgia O’Keeffe, for her inspirational influence on our current collection. We re-dressed the decor in our San Miguel flagship boutique to evoke the simple, unadorned beauty of her beloved “Ghost Ranch” outside Taos and Santa Fe.

And then, we threw a party!
