American Red Cross: Superstorm Sandy - One Year Update
“I don’t know where I would be...but I wouldn’t be back in my home without the American Red Cross.”

Suzanne McDonnell, Ocean Gate, N.J.

Dear Friend,

One year ago, Superstorm Sandy battered the Northeast, leaving hundreds of thousands of people homeless and 8.5 million without power across 11 states. Thanks to the generous response of hundreds of thousands of supporters like you the American Red Cross mounted its biggest disaster response in years, providing food, shelter and comfort immediately after the storm and helping thousands of families recover and rebuild. To date, more than 90% of the funds raised have been spent or committed.

We are so grateful to the Red Cross community for enabling this response effort. Whether you donated funds, gave blood, or signed up to volunteer know that you made a difference to a family in need.

Superstorm Sandy   Read our Sandy One-Year Update with personal stories and a timeline of events to learn how your gift is helping communities rebuild and families recover.
For me, having grown up and spent much of my life in New York and New Jersey, the destruction left in the wake of the storm was heartbreaking. But, like Suzanne, I was filled with hope to see the Red Cross community come together to raise $308 million in donations for Sandy emergency relief and recovery efforts. Thanks to the generous response from our supporters in the wake of Superstorm Sandy, the Red Cross has been able to:
  • Provide more than 74,000 overnight stays in shelters
  • Distribute more than 7 million relief items
  • Provide nearly 113,000 health and mental health contacts
  • Serve more than 17.5 million meals and snacks
  • Mobilize more than 17,000 workers and volunteers
The Red Cross continues to provide support in local communities and to develop resiliency programs that will help strengthen communities against future disasters.

You have made, and continue to make, a difference in thousands of lives. And no amount of thanks is enough.

With gratitude,

Gail McGovern
