Self-care oftentimes is the first thing that falls to the wayside when becoming a mother. Your child(ren) and significant other consistently rely on you maintain some semblance of function and peace at home. Add work (especially from home) into the mix and it's even harder to make time for yourself. Meanwhile, as your "you" time decreases your stress level increases causing a negative impact on your personal performance.

Per The Harvard Business Review, Ph.D Palena Neale speaks to the necessity of carving out "you" time given our bodies physiological tie to stress. Our amygdala — "the part of the brain responsible for our evolutionary fight-or-flight response — kicks in, diverting resources from the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for logical reasoning, problem solving, decision making, and willpower. In other words, it is precisely when we’re feeling stressed and overwhelmed that we would most benefit from slowing down in order to think big, innovate, and solve the problems that are stressing us out."

She recommends 3 data-backed ways to decompress.

  1. Sleep - Getting proper sleep (7+ hours a night ) has been linked to increased focus and improved cognitive function (including creativity and innovation), plus a greater capacity to learn.
  2. Healthy diet - Tied to better moods, higher energy levels, and lower levels of depression.
  3. Exercise - Aerobic exercise increases blood flow, boosting both learning and memory.

Dr. Neale also mentions the importance of "micro-breaks." Short diversions like meditation to improve emotion regulation, journaling to help with self-awareness, reach out to a close friend for social connectedness (especially through COVID), and a short walk to get blood flowing.

On this Mother's Day take some time for yourself. It is scientifically proven that by taking proper care for yourself you're more capable to care for those around you.
