Hello there, Pillow People! 🤗

Paige here, on behalf of your favorite Sleep Coaches, Sleep Artisan.

I’m here this week to share some recommendations that have nothing to do with your bed. (Well, okay, actually these have everything to do with your bed, er, at least your sleeping in it.)

I’m talking about biohacking your sleep. Now, I am not recommending you turn yourself into a cyborg, but there are some tech wearables that can actually track your sleep and make recommendations on how to improve your sleep health.

“Paige,” you ask me, “what’s a tech wearable?

A wearable is a small device that you can wear on your wrist that monitors your heart rate, temperature, and even mood, and it has the amazing ability to track not only when you are asleep, but the actual amount of time you spend in each stage of sleep.

Did you know that we pass through three stages of sleep nightly? We go through light sleep, REM sleep, and deep sleep and each one is essential for our physical and mental health.

Light sleep is the initial stage of sleep. You can experience muscle spasms or twitches during this stage, and truthfully, around 50% of your night will be spent in light sleep.

REM sleep stands for Rapid Eye Movement sleep. This stage is when dreaming and memory processing occurs. This stage dominates the second half of your night and usually accounts for around 20% to 25% of your sleep.

Deep sleep is the stage that contributes most to your feeling refreshed. Your heart rate and breathing will slow to their lowest levels and your body works to repair itself during deep sleep. This usually accounts for around 20% of your night.

So, now that you know all that, how can you track how your night goes? There are several trackers on the market that provide great feedback for you to see just how you are sleeping.

Here are the top 5 sleep trackers on the market right now:

-FitBit Versa
-Amazon Halo
-Garmin Vivosmart
-Oura Ring
-Apple Watch, Series 6

These vary in price and so do your research to find the one that works best for you. And once you have started tracking your sleep, you might find things like you take too long to initially fall asleep, or you have distractions throughout the night like a pet or bathroom runs.

If you are aware of these things, you can begin to make tiny adjustments to help benefit your sleep.

It might be that you need to lock the cat out of your room or stop drinking liquids earlier in the evening. Or you might need to upgrade your pillow’s adjustable loft to find the ideal position to fall asleep faster.

It’s time to upgrade your sleep and health game and now you have the tools to do it.

Here’s to sleeping better. Naturally!
