How to Speed Up Windows Explorer?
Works with Windows 7 and Windows 8
Dear -,
Welcome to the 14th week of Solvusoft’s free Windows tips and tricks. This week we will show you how to easily speed up Windows Explorer. Efficient file management requires the ability to navigate quickly between folders and files. With a few tweaks to Windows Explorer's settings and a few keyboard shortcuts, navigation through your machine's gigabytes of stored data can be signifactly improved in terms of speed.
Speeding up Windows Explorer
Windows 7
If you aren’t sure what Windows Explorer is, it's a Windows program that lets you browse directories and folders on your computer. As the data pile up, it takes more time for Windows Explorer to open the desired folder and finds the exact file that you’ve been looking for. You can significantly speed up the display load time of Windows Explorer by disabling the option to search for network printers and folders. By default, each time Windows Explorer is opened it will try to locate any printer or folder on your computer network. If your computer is not connected to a network, or you have no network printers or folders that are being shared, you can disable this option altogether by following these steps:
- Open Windows Explorer.
- Click the Tools drop-down menu and then Folder Options.
- Within the Folder Options tab, click the View tab.
- Uncheck "Automatically search for network folders and printers."
Windows 8
- Select “Search” option available in the Charms Bar, type “Control Panel” in the text box and press Enter key on your keyboard.
- In the Control Panel window go to “Network and Internet” option and select “View Network Status and Tasks”.
- Now click on the “Change Advanced Sharing Settings” on the left pane of the screen.
- In “Advanced Sharing Settings” Window under “File and Printer Sharing” options disable sharing of files and Printer.
- Select “Save Changes” and then restart your computer to make changes to take effect.
In Windows 8 there are also a few additional features in Windows Explorer that you can disable in order to improve its functionality and speed. Here it is how to do it:
- Open My Computer and click on "View" tab present in the Ribbon.
- Now click on "Options" button present at the end to open Folder Options window.
- Go to "View" tab and uncheck the following options:
- Display file size information in folder tips
- Hide empty drives in the Computer folder
- Hide extensions for known file types
- Show encrypted or compressed NTFS files in color
- Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items
