1. What's the best iPad for pilots?

Considering your first iPad or upgrading your old one? There are a lot of options. In this article, we'll walk you through all the options, then offer our choice for the best overall aviation tablet.

2. No place to hide - a flight instructor slips up.

I had volunteered to fly Bill in from Des Moines earlier in the day and had spent the rest of it waiting at the Dubuque airport for his return. The airplane, an older model Cessna 182 and unfamiliar to me, was borrowed from of friend of his. I had never flown it before, nor had I bothered to pay much attention to its panel layout. Those were details meant only for bush-league pilots, not me.

3. Video Tip: get a "big picture" weather briefing.

Checking the weather is one of the few constants in aviation. All pilots do it, whether it's a trip around the pattern in a Cub or a trip across the Atlantic in a Gulfstream. But merely getting a weather briefing isnt enough; it has to be a good weather briefing to make the flight safer. So what exactly does a good briefing involve?

4.Emergency landing vs. crashing.

The control of the aircraft during any approach and touchdown determines the difference of landing or crashing. A controlled aircraft flown to and through touchdown is a landing. An approach which stalls the aircraft at any time prior to touchdown will result in a crash. A crash is an aircraft falling uncontrolled to the surface, even just a few feet.

5. How to keep your iPad from overheating in flight.

Based on an iPad Pilot News reader survey we recently conducted, over 70% of respondents reported that they have had the iPad shut down on them at least once in flight due to overheating. This is by far the most common problem reported by pilots when flying with an iPad, but it can be prevented with a little bit of planning and preparation.
