1. Creating your own iPad proficiency review.

As the old saying goes, "train like you fly, fly like you train." If you fly with an iPad, don't hide it during your training flights. Better to make it an integral part of your proficiency program, whether you're on your own or with an instructor, including what to do if it fails. Here's a suggested list of topics to cover.

2. A kinder, gentler FAA.

The good news is that the FAA is currently operating under a new, so-called Compliance Philosophy, showing a kinder and gentler treatment of those charged with potential violations of the Federal Aviation Regulations and other aviation laws. However, the bad news is that FAA enforcement of the laws and regulations is still alive and well in many cases.

3. iOS Update Green Light program: iOS 11.4.

Apple recently introduced an updated version of its mobile operating system, iOS 11.4. It's not always a good idea to be an early adopter of the new operating system because sometimes there are bugs. For pilots flying with the iPad, this can create a critical go or no-go situation if your iPad is down and it's your primary charting device in the cockpit. We've seen issues before and thankfully Apple is quick to fix them. However, don't fall victim to an update that's not good for your EFB. We test a variety of apps with the updated operating system to let pilots know when it's okay to update. See our latest recommendations.

4. Video: how a drone pilot become a bush pilot.

Trent Palmer makes some of the most amazing flying videos anywhere, usually involving bush planes with big tires and rarely involving paved runways. What most people don't know is that Trent was initially terrified of flying. Watch this video to learn how he conquered his fears, and of course see some great backcountry flying.

5. The GPS revolution at 20 - how aviation has changed.

Decades after it first caught on, GPS is so deeply embedded in everyday life that we now take it for granted. But as important as GPS has been for the world as a whole, it's hard to think of an industry more transformed than general aviation. Consider the long list of capabilities that even a 60-year old Light Sport Aircraft can now have thanks to this revolution.
