According to the American Medical Association, 39.6% of American adults over the age of 20 were considered obese in 2015 and 2016. This compares unfavorably to the statistics in 2007 and 2008, when 33.7% were considered obese. Even worse, researchers from divisions of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have concluded that obesity in adults has steadily increased since the 1980s. A 2016 study published in The Lancet (a medical journal) found that for the first time in human history, there are more obese people than underweight people in the world. This trend is not your friend!

Of course, the above data is about obesity. When you expand it to include overweight people the numbers are staggering. Clearly, we need to understand what is driving this trend. Some of the many factors identified include:

  • Diet
    • Increase in high-fructose corn syrup consumption
    • Increase in sugar consumption
    • Increase in portion sizes
  • Physical activity (specifically inactivity or insufficient activity)
  • Lifestyle
  • Medication
  • Food marketing and promotion
  • Genetics
  • Diseases
  • Medications
  • Economic and social issues
  • Age
  • Pregnancy
  • Cessation of smoking
  • Lack of sleep
  • Stress

We need to do a better job teaching our children how to eat. Frankly, we need to teach most of the human population how to eat. We also need to encourage a more active and healthy lifestyle.


Diet: Focus on low-calorie, nutrient dense foods with a strong emphasis on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. We favor a primarily plant-based diet. Avoid or limit alcohol (sorry), limit sweets, and avoid saturated fat and high fructose corn syrup. Remember to stay hydrated.

Exercise: Do it regularly! You need 2.5 5 hours of moderate exercise (such as walking, cycling, or swimming) per week.

Sleep and relax: Adults should try and get 8 hours of sleep per night. Try to minimize the stress, and manage it better. In addition to exercise, consider meditation and yoga.

Keep a log: Tracking your weight and eating and exercise habits will help you maintain your focus, eat less, and exercise more. Consider using a dieting app to help you stay on track.

Dont give up: Shockingly about 45% of dieters give up after a week! It took you a lot longer than a week to gain the weight, so be patient. Try to set realistic goals. Accept that you are not always going to be perfect. Get a diet buddy and surround yourself with supportive people.

The risk of disease increases disproportionately with the amount that one is overweight.
Not surprisingly, the cost of medical care also increases for overweight and obese individuals. The list of diseases and conditions related to being overweight is horrifying. Similarly the cost to individuals and society is overwhelming. Maybe disease and cost will motivate you. If not, find something that will.

Of course every individual is unique and results will vary based on many factors. An increase in exercise will usually help increase weight loss.
