Prepare Your Immunity For Allergy Season

Why March Is A Good Month To Prepare For
Hay Fever Season

If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, you may be wondering if the heels of Winter is really necessary for thinking about hayfever season which at present, feels like a long way off.

You will no doubt be aware from the snowdrops and crocuses which have begun to poke their heads through the soil, that March is a month that nature begins to move towards Spring.  What you may not be aware of, is that the changes in nature impact our hormonal system as it tries to adjust and in particular the adrenals (the adaptation organ par excellence) and the thyroid (whose role is among other things, to regulate baseline metabolic function), both of which need time to build function up to optimal levels.  This time is increased when we are stressed, busy or not getting enough sleep!

The effective treatment of naturopathy and bioresonance with their combined aim to stimulate the body’s innate ability to heal can take time, especially if the body has been ‘out of balance’ and patients have suffered with allergies for years. Since Spring is when seasonal allergies begin, it is important to start supporting the body 1-2 months in advance if you don’t want to suffer.

What You Can Do Now To Prepare For Allergy Season.

Whilst it is recommended to have a proper consultation and develop a personalised treatment strategy to effect deep and long-term systemic change, there are things we can all do now to begin to prepare our body for allergy season.

Eliminating or reducing allergen exposure and improving diet are two key factors.  

Reducing exposure to or eliminating specific allergens that you may be aware of such as certain pollens, dander or dust mites will help, as well as ensuring the quality of your internal air in the home.

In addition, people with significant allergies often have very sensitive digestive systems (the digestive system is in many respects the ‘seat of immunity’ after all and histamine has an important role to play here as well).  Foods that impact on gut integrity and are often mucous-building, namely cow dairy (sheep and goat do as well but to a lesser extent), wheat (and/or gluten), refined sugars (including alcohol) and stimulants (coffee and teas).  

Give preference to the following foods in your diet:

  • Dark green, leafy vegetables
  • Deep yellow and orange vegetables
  • Nettles, bamboo shoots, cabbage, beets
  • Onions, garlic, ginger, cayenne, horseradish
  • Reduce foods high in histamines (or histamine releasing) if suffer badly during the hay fever season. Get on the low histamine mantra: “buy fresh, cook fresh, and eat fresh”. You can find the full list and some specific guidance in relation to what foods to reduce or avoid on the blog.
Other strategies include supporting gut function with targeted probiotics, stress management, nasal irrigation, nutritional supplements, herbal medicine, homeopathic remedies and Bowen therapy, all of which are explored in greater depth on the blog HERE.
