Here’s a wine that gives other Super Tuscans deep insecurity because it delivers the goods at a price they cannot compete with. And we mean at the full $135, NOT at $85 - best price anywhere, guaranteed - happening here and now.

Get this, as if a Tre Bicchieri - the highest accolade an Italian can achieve - isn’t enough, it has not one, not two, or three, but QUADRUPLE 96 points. The hype is real, and it truly has “a level of finesse here that is simply unreal” as Galloni noted.

True, it was Sassicaia that came first in the 1970s, but Grattamacco was the next Bolgheri knockout, and the pursuing decades were a dynamic era that gave birth to many Super Tuscans. This prime plot on the neoclassic coastal paradise for Cabernet and other Bordeaux varieties found new life in the 21st century under the auspices of the Swiss-Italian Bertarelli family of mythical fortunes.

What matters most though, is what’s in our glasses. SO MUCH finesse, power, elegance, grace, and all. The word balance does not do it justice. Yes, it’s like a great Pauillac, but with that cool added coastal Italian dimension, with a deep cut of blackberries lifted by a spearmint edge. Freshly rolled Cuban cigars and expensive leather - like what you find in exotic cars - are there in spades along with the core of rich black and blue fruits, a potpourri of herbs and pencil shavings, culminating in a towering finish. WOW. Gorgeous as it is even today, the lasting power is there to go decades in the cellar.

“Grattamacco is one of those curious estates that is both historic and yet somehow under the radar. The flagship Grattamacco is terrific in 2018, but all of the wines are terrific. Stylistically, the wines are pretty classic in feel, with good structure and, less of the more modern opulence found at other properties. The 2018 Grattamacco is the most elegant, refined and satisfying wine I have ever tasted from Grattamacco. There is a level of finesse here that is simply unreal. Bright and translucent, with tons of detail, the 2018 oozes with pedigree. Lavender, spice, mint, tobacco and dried flowers add an attractive upper register. Drink 2026-2023.”

“This wine is packed with pure flavors of blackcurrant and raspberry buoyed by brisk acidity. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with 20 percent Merlot and 15 percent Sangiovese, Grattamacco aged in French oak barriques, about one-third new, where the lightly chewy tannins developed, giving shape to the bold, primary fruit tones. The wine takes on notes of graphite and fresh tobacco, while lively spices energize the fruit, drawing out the flavors on a long, exuberant finish.”
