2018 'RunRig' Barossa Valley Shiraz

“Among the most exciting wines being made on Planet Earth.” - Robert Parker

Man, it’s exactly like that we were down 7-9 in the 9th inning in Babe Ruth. The count was 3-2 and I crushed a grand slam walk-off home run. Everybody cheered, high fives all around, showered in Gatorade crossing home plate.

Only this really happened.

Yes, Torbreck RunRig is here before your very eyes… that one, the one and only RUNRIG! 99 POINTS! TWO of them, one from the top authority this side of the Atlantic and one from the leading publication across the pond, too! A wine that must be tasted to be believed. And a price that will bring the collector to their knees. Not $300… or $200… or $150. We’re going down, baby, waaaaaaaaaaaaaa…………………

For a brief moment in time, it graces our humble website for around $50 less than the lowest price you can find anywhere. What little we have is moving fast and running low like a Dachshund race.

Torbreck, for those who know, makes some of Australia’s - actually, make that the WORLD’S - most coveted wines. RunRig almost always accumulates a pile of 99-100 point scores and has drawn comparisons with the crème de la crème from the steep slopes of Northern Rhône Valley’s pearl, Côte Rôtie. It’s a titan of a wine that competes against the very best from anywhere in the world. A perennial masterpiece of exuberance, sophistication, and head-spinning complexity.

We can wax poetic for days but here’s the deal. It’s hugely concentrated, opulent, bold - but words hardly describe the massive profile it exhibits. That’s why people who review it say simple things like “best wine I’ve ever tasted” or “best wine in the world.” Incredibly rich black and red fruits wash across your tongue with a glycerin-like texture. Black tea, warm spices, cherry liqueur, toasty sweet tobacco, and Chinese five spice all join in the symphony of flavors. Each sip delivers a cascading torrent of pleasure and excitement.

Antonio Galloni’s Vinous sums up what makes RunRig iconic: “an extraordinary combination of concentration, power and elegance.”

The only downer, we wish we had more. Get what you can, while it lasts!

99 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“In the 27 years since its founding in 1994, Torbreck has become one of the icons of Australian wine, championing the old-vine treasures of the Barossa. This year’s releases include stunning versions of the winery’s top cuvées: with the 2018 RunRig being this taster’s personal favorite for its superb balance. In short, for consumers seeking bold, flavorful wines that reflect their origins, Torbreck is among Australia’s top producers. Torbreck’s 2018 RunRig needs a bit of air right now, as the nose and palate truly open up and expand after a while in the glass. Unlike some vintages, it’s rather tight and cedary upon first pour, then relaxes to reveal hints of stone fruit, blueberries, cherries, pastry crust and baking spices. In the mouth, it’s full-bodied and concentrated, richly textured and marked by ripe tannins, which leave behind a velvety, mouth-coating finish tinged with licorice and dark berries. While approachable now - and even damn enjoyable - it deserves another several years in the cellar. Drink 2025-2040.”

99 Points – Decanter

“The must-try wine is tightly wound yet with cashmere tannins, soft kid-glove oak and cut-finger minerality. The anise, clove and cinnamon-edged palate is unbelievably svelte, like melted chocolate. On day two, succulent, spicy cherry fruit emerges, with blackberry liqueur, roses and violets. Savoury cep undertones, graphite and cedar follow through on an endless finish. A stunning blend of six old vineyards, one planted in the 1850s. Drink 2025-2040.”
