Happy New Year!

Not all New Year's resolutions are equal.  Neither are expectations for smart home technologies.

However, at Ting there is ONE thing we know is always equal - the great appreciation we feel when our customers share stories of how Ting has impacted them.  A quick read awaits you!

What's in a 'resolution'?

The Oxford Dictionary defines RESOLUTION as a firm decision to do or not to do something.

On Jan 1 a large majority of us testify that we'll stay in shape, eat better, call a friend more, etc.  In contrast, some of us steer clear of making any resolutions.

No matter where you fall on this spectrum, these promises to ourselves are generally made in an effort to become a better person, to have a better life.  When making such a promise, it's always good to keep in mind what is truly important to you and to those that matter in your life.  Some thoughtful reflection always centers and lends focus.

What's truly important to us

At Ting, our single resolution holds true year after year: providing YOU peace of mind simply but smartly, with expert monitoring of your home's electrical system.

Just like any other risk or issue inside or outside your home, electrical faults can arise at any time, with many quietly developing slowly and hidden from sight.  No matter the age or condition of your home, Ting has you covered.

There's no glamour in safety

New Year's resolutions involving home safety are relatively rare and certainly not as compelling as personal resolutions - at least not on the surface.

That's because safety is not exciting or alluring.  But if you own or rent, have kids, pets or older family members in your home - putting your best foot forward with respect to safety is super important.

This is a great time of year to identify and prioritize those things that have a positive impact on safety for you and your family.  Some of those items may not be top of mind.  Some examples include the following:

smoke detector with smoke surrounding it

Upgrade those smoke detectorsIt is often assumed that you have the right coverage for your home.  If you're not sure you do, reference this first - an easy to read guide from the NFPA.  Once you are sure you have the right coverage...

If your smoke detectors are nearing 10 years old, it's time to get new ones.  To get started, check out asecurelife.com or safety.com for information on the latest models and features.

overloaded wall power outlet

Consider upgrading electrical 'access'.  Do some of your outlets look like they have an octopus hanging off of them?  Consult a licensed electrician to assess and suggest improvements.  This type of upgrade is more common than you might think and can do wonders for your safety and convenience.

Ever wonder what builders need to consider for a given room?  Here's a good reference article on electrical outlet planning.

old ceiling fan

Balance or replace that wobbly ceiling fan.  Excessive wobbling over time can create hazardous conditions - in the form of the fan falling, premature motor failure, or electrical connections loosening and silently causing tiny arc faults (oh - Ting would detect these faults!).

If your fan is not that old, here's a good step by step process for balancing it.

UPDATE:  attic radon pump and 6-year-old home

damaged radon pump, electrical fire hazard

I had mentioned a few weeks back that we had another fabulous customer outcome:  Ting detected a hidden electrical fire hazard in the attic.  We were somewhat surprised to see this happen in such a young home.  However, it illustrates the importance of continuous visibility and monitoring for conditions that you can't easily see or observe, no matter the age of your home.

This homeowner graciously shared her experience:

"We had experienced a few ‘flaky’ things in our home, which was built in 2013. I was offered the opportunity to get Ting so I jumped on board to have it monitor my home’s electrical network for peace of mind – and thank goodness I did. We installed the Ting device in our home in June. After a couple of months of no issues, Ting detected a clear and present fire hazard inside the radon pump in my attic. Ting even covered the cost of getting it replaced; the Ting technician worked with our electrician to resolve the problem. Without Ting, this would likely have led to a catastrophic fire and loss of our home – or even worse. Thank you Ting! We are big believers in this device!"
