pic Hi ,

I hope you are finding these border tips helpful. I have been applying for TN Visas for over 12 years, and I have obtained more than 15 TN visas — so I know what you are going through to obtain your TN Visa. Today’s tip is something that happened to me, and once you learn what it is you can make sure you do not make this mistake.

When your TN Visa is approved at a border crossing you will be required to pay the visa fee. What forms of payment are accepted? - That just depends on the border crossing and there are no standard rules. So you want to be careful and play it safe. The last thing you want is to be told to come back another day because your payment method is not accepted.

Mistake 5: Expecting Different Payment Methods Will Work at the Border

Checks? Never expect to pay by check. The government does not want to worry about cashing checks, bounced checks, etc. They want guaranteed payment.

Credit cards? There was a time when you could not pay by credit card when you applied for your TN Visa at the border. Now most border crossings allow you to pay your visa fee by credit card. But sometimes when you cross at a land border crossing (via Mexico, prairie provinces) their credit card machines may not have a signal and so they expect you to pay by cash. Most airport border crossings will accept credit cards for payment.

Play it Safe - Cash is King

Cash? Yes! This is the best way to pay your visa fee. Always bring extra cash in small denominations. Sometimes there are extra fees you are not aware of. For example, there is a Form I-94 fee; sometimes it is included in your airline ticket, but other times it is not, and you may be asked to pay this after your TN Visa is approved.

If you apply at a border crossing that is not very heavily crossed, sometimes the cashier at the border crossing will not have change. So you either need to pay the visa fee in the exact change or you lose the difference.

Plan for this and do not fall into this trap. It is a horrible feeling to be approved and think you can enter your new country, but you are not able to do so because you do not have sufficient funds.
