The fifth round of the 250 west coast supercross series was trying for the Troy Lee Designs / Lucas Oil / Honda team. Coming into the night the boys were building momentum and looking to break through for their first win of the season. But the slick circuit in Angel Stadium had other plans.

The opening heat race included all three TLD riders: Cole Seely, Christian Craig and Jessy Nelson. Jessy nabbed another great start and sat in second early on. Cole and Christian were between fifth and seventh and trying to move forward. In that battle, Craig tangled with another rider and went down. He would be forced to the LCQ. Seely made good progress and pushed his way to third by the finish. Christian snuck out of the LCQ with a second place and the final transfer spot to the main event.

The final is where things really got rough. All three riders had average starts and Seely was going forward, as high as fifth at one point. However, he crashed in a turn and would remount in seventeenth spot. It took all Cole could do to get back to twelfth at the finish. Nelson had trouble finding his speed all day. His mid-pack start didn’t help his situation and he rode to an eleventh place finish. Craig was doing his best but a crash on lap nine would relegate him to the back of the pack and he would complete the train of TLD riders across the line in thirteenth.

This was definitely not the weekend the Troy Lee Designs team was working towards but it gives them a renewed motivation for this weekend’s race in San Diego. Cole Seely is still one of only a few riders capable of winning. Nelson is searching for his first podium and another holeshot. And Craig has yet to have the breakout ride he is capable of. Championship-winning teams are defined by the way they rebound from adversity and Troy Lee Designs will be back next weekend in a big way.

To help support cancer awareness, the team wore pink gear and custom pink helmets, along with the pink plastics on the race bikes. All of these items will be auctioned on eBay starting today, with 100% of the proceeds being donated to the American Cancer Society.
