Truly great wineries get their reputations by balancing rigorous consistency with delightful discovery. Drinking their wines is like finding an old friend who always has something new and interesting to say. It is an almost impossible balancing act. Yet Domaine Weinbach does it all the time. The 2011 Cuvee Laurence has a classic perfume, lychee, honey and even grapefruit assembly, but it is the full body that makes one sit up and take notice. Loucoum (Turkish Delight) flavors are the dominant tone here, as well as a caramel attack in which the fruit is just the right side of overwhelming. A special aspect of the wine is its perfect tone and fine line of acidity from attack to finish. It is mouth-coating and very long, as one always expects from the ethereal wines of Mrs. Faller and her daughters.
