Poggio San Polo Brunello di Montalcino 2003, 2004, 2005
$275.00 RETAIL PRICE
Brunello is a demanding wine. It taxes both producer and consumer. The meticulous production and aging for the former and the costly purchase and additional aging for the latter. When done right, from all perspectives, Brunello rewards greatly.
While Tuscany seems quite warm and sunny it is still a fairly cool and often variable wine production area. A fascinating line-up of vintages can be sampled in this wine trio of 2003, 2004 and 2005. Vintage 2003 was hot and dry (the label changed after this vintage). Vintage 2004 was rich and heralded early on. Vintage 2005 was cool-hot-cool and challenging.
It’s hard to know how best to drink these wines. Poppping open the trio is an excellent lesson in vintage variation. Opening the most drinkable now and finishing with the best-to-age in 10 years is also an option. What is also feasible, but what would be a shame, would be to miss out on the chance to buy these glowing, soulful Brunello bottlings.
