Merlot is pronounced “MerloT” in Italy – with an accent on the final T. It seems as though the Italians are trying to make the variety their own just by varying the pronunciation. But, in fact, the grape has long been planted in Italy, especially in Friuli, and is indigenous in its own right…especially if we consider how brief a time our own country has been planting European varieties!
