This year’s Met Gala is special for a couple of reasons. The first since the pandemic, it will take place in September rather than its usual first Monday in May date. It will also feature an archival look from DVF: a wrap dress sourced from a vintage Italian shop, featuring a sample of Diane's Tatiana fragrance on the garment tag. The exhibit itself will be split into two parts, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” premiering this week and “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” next May.

The genesis of DVF coincided with an incendiary era, the 70s. The women’s liberation movement was gaining momentum; Gloria Steinem, Bella Abzug, Shirley Chisholm, and many others were reaching marks women had heretofore not been able to reach. And the boisterous Studio 54 era, where artists, partying, and sexual freedom were ubiquitous among the New York City scene.

Women were feeling empowered and joining the workforce at rapid rates, the LGBTQ community was becoming more visible, the country was leaving a decade where war had ended, the Civil Rights Act was passed, and we had just landed on the moon. In the middle of the new era, the wrap was born.

Given the zeitgeist, it’s no wonder women resonated with Diane’s designs and her story so instantly. Her silhouettes provided sexy yet professional solutions; they were simple, affordable, colorful, easy to pack, and even easier to throw on. These were styles that worked with and for women. It is an honor to have them recognized for their contributions in this year's Met Costume Institute exhibit.
