Newsletter #49

Latest news of the Rocket at the speed of light!

Hey Rocketeer,

Welcome to a new episode of the WP Rocket newsletter!

In two weeks, our newsletter will reach issue #50, and this seems to us the ideal moment to ask you what you think about it.

How to improve its content? What are your tastes when it comes to reading news about the world of web performance?

We'd love your feedback! It will only take 3 minutes.

Now that you've told us how you feel about our newsletter let's get down to this week's content.

In recent days, Google has launched the new version of Lighthouse and the Web Vitals initiative. We'll review what this means for PageSpeed metrics and the resulting performance score for your website.

We also continue our eCommerce themed insights by exploring the world of WooCommerce shipping plugins.

As for the articles found around the web that we liked the most during these two weeks: you can take a closer look at the fastest Google Fonts and find out how the WordPress premium plugin market has reacted in this challenging time of the epidemic.

PageSpeed Insights results are powered by the Lighthouse API.
The famous PageSpeed score is no exception: the speed rating that you see on the top of your PageSpeed report is based on the lab data analyzed by Lighthouse.

Yesterday, May 19, Googe launched Lighthouse V6 and introduced the new set of metrics that determine the PageSpeed Insights performance score.

Let's take a look at how this update fits into the functioning of PageSpeed Insights.

PageSpeed Insights How It Works

What Is PageSpeed Insights and How Does It Work?

The perfect speed test tool doesn’t exist. PageSpeed Insights shouldn’t be considered the only voice of truth, but a good ally for your web page performance assessments, along with other equally valid tools. With this guide, you’ll get to know PageSpeed Insights from its core; you’ll understand how its famous score system works and what exactly it measures.

Shipping is, quite obviously, an incredibly important part of every eCommerce store. But, since this is a broad category, it's important to break down what “shipping” really means.
For example, the shipping process includes:

  • Accurately calculating shipping rates when shoppers go to check out.
  • Printing shipping labels/packing slips and handing over boxes to your carrier.
  • Informing shoppers of when they should expect their items to arrive (along with tracking information).

How does all this translate into plugins for your eCommerce?

When you run an eCommerce store, you need to be able to calculate accurate shipping rates to control your costs. You need to be able to quickly ship out orders without wasting time. And you also need to be able to keep shoppers informed of when to expect their orders. The plugins in this post can help you accomplish all of that and more.

Reading Suggestions

Here are two of the articles we've enjoyed reading the most in these two weeks.

Harry Roberts from CSS Wizardry compares the performance of self-hosted fonts with that of web fonts like Google Fonts.

Alex Denning from Ellipsis Marketing, on the other hand, analyzes—data in hand—the recent rise of WordPress theme searches and the impact this is having on sales of freemium and premium plugins.

Don't miss it! 👇

In this article, Harry Roberts explains that although self-hosting web fonts are probably the best solution in terms of performance, with Google Fonts, you can design measures strong enough to help mitigate font performance and availability issues.

Covid WordPress search surge

Searches for WordPress Are Up 52% in the Last Month: Understanding the Surge

A huge increase in searches for WordPress solutions is good for the WordPress ecosystem, but in a pandemic, are people buying products? Or are they looking for freebies? These are the questions Alex Denning answers in his interesting article.

That's all for today.

Stay safe out there, and see you in two weeks! 💛
