When creating these designs I tried to mix colors that some people might not think go together or be scared to tried. One of my favorite pieces from the collection is 'Bangkok'. In this design you see four different colors ranging from blue, purple and white all set in yellow gold. A design like this where I mixed colors changes the entire look of the piece which I was going for. One of my favorite things about this collection is all of the contrasting colors. Early in the 19th century, mass immigration brought on a boom in pickle production, and non-English speaking Polish, German, and Jewish immigrants began selling their pickles to customers on the street using pushcarts. The first peddlers appeared on the Lower East Side in the 1860s, and by 1900, there were about 3,000 pickle vendors throughout the city. Believe it or not, its popularity almost brought the pickle down: Orchard and Essex Streets soon reeked so much of dill and garlic that a citywide fight against the pickle began. By 1940, NYC had banned all street commerce, forcing many picklers to close shop, and only a handful are still around today. Celebrate history, good taste and persistence with us this Sunday at the 19th Lower East Side Pickle Day, there will be free samples, games, live music, and giveaways! Colin Kaepernick makes surprise appearance at Lower East Side Girls Club At the Photoville festival in Brooklyn I recently had a chance to see the photo exhibit of the LES Girls Club and started to become curious about the work of these inspiring young women. Just a few days later I read about a famous speaker who stopped by to share his powerful story. No other than Colin Kaepernick surprised the girls at the Lower East Side Girls Club on Avenue D! When he walked into the room, the girls broke out in cheers as they gave him a hero’s reception. He was the guest speaker at the club’s third annual Nike Backpack Giveaway. In true rebel fashion, his T-shirt read the words, “I Know My Rights.” The former NFL player explained to the group of ladies that were all from different groups, why he started to protest police brutality by kneeling during the national anthem in 2016. The Quarterback, who led the 49ers to the Super Bowl in 2013, is more prominent than ever headlining the latest Nike campaign with the slogan “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.” The Girls Club was founded in 1996 as a means to address the lack of services available to girls and young women. Savage x Fenty: Yaf Sparkle body chains part of Rihanna's epic fashion show! View this email in your browser What's new Earrings Rings Hi craftsmanship many times was born out of scarcity. The same is true for Carmen Fiol's designs, who fought a long and stubborn fight for her right to pursue a career in fashion. It is said that in over 70 years of creating, not once has she made the same design twice. Monika Knutsson discovered Fiol’s designs on her first visit to Cuba in 2017, shortly after the designer’s death. She returned this spring, becoming acquainted with Fiol’s ingenious dressmaking techniques, artfully combining her ethereal geometric and floral-motif laces with pintucks. The lace, says Knutsson, “was used less as embellishment and more to give the garment structure, flow and air.” Join us this Sunday when we celebrate Carmen Fiol, the end of a beautiful summer, the vibrancy of Cuban culture and Monika Knutsson's talent to transform lace into timeless jewelry creations. Join us 9/16, 3-6PM at 249 Broome Street, get your free tickets here Savage x Fenty: Yaf Sparkle Body chains make history It is one of the most talked about fashion shows ever, and I am beyond grateful to see Yaf Sparkle being a part of it! Rihanna's lingerie line closed out Fashion week in its first ever NYFW appearance with a fully choreographed performance featuring lesser-known models, as well as famous faces like Gigi and Bella Hadid, Joan Smalls, Duckie Thot, and Slick Woods. The show was about inclusivity, models came in all shapes, sizes and ethnicities; they had different hair colors, skin colors, body markings, curves and commanded the room with their own unique swagger - visibly pregnant women being one of the main focal points! The casting was a reminder that fashion is for all, but it was also a true celebration of womanhood and its magnificent ability to carry life. It is hard not to compare this event to the Victoria's Secret show, which was left looking outdated after Rihanna's latest outing at Brooklyn Navy Yard in New York. In my perception the atmosphere in the room was very special probably because of this liberation, as no restrictions applied when NYFW'18 closed its curtain. We all are beautiful! The name Zabar looms over the New York food world, cornering the market on food markets, bakeries and wine shops. Eighty years and three generations of Zabars later, Zabar’s is still a family business. Now Oliver Zabar, the son of patriarch Eli, is spreading his own wings. Oliver is on track to open Devon by the end of the month, adding a casual restaurant and cocktail bar, with an adjacent retail bakery that will supply the restaurant with breads and pastries to Broome Streets' finest. Devon will offer what Mr. Zabar calls “elevated American bar food” with a French influence.
