For years, the conventional wisdom in fitness was that building muscle and losing fat were mutually exclusive goals that had to be pursued in separate phases. You bulked first, gaining muscle alongside unavoidable fat. Then you cut, losing fat alongside unavoidable muscle. The net result, after all that effort, was hopefully a better body composition than when you started, but rarely the clean, efficient outcome most people were actually working toward.
That model is outdated. The research on body recomposition tells a more nuanced and more encouraging story, and understanding it changes how you approach both your training and your supplementation.
