Five months after Kyla Simpson gave birth, two Chinese strangers arrived at her apartment in a black SUV and knocked on her door. The men carried backpacks and wore sunglasses and baseball caps. “We know you have the boys,” one of them declared. “We have power of attorney.” He held papers up in front of the peephole.
Simpson was out running errands while her husband, Lincoln, was home with the triplets. Isaac, Solomon, and Christopher had just finished breakfast; Lincoln shut them in the bedroom and, frantic, called Simpson. She got in the car, praying the babies would stay quiet so the men didn’t hear them.
Isaac, Solomon, and Christopher didn’t belong to Simpson in any official sense. She’d carried them as a surrogate for a single man in China named Ted Zhou. He and Simpson had entered into the contract with joy and optimism. They were both Christian and curious about the other’s culture. But after his sons were born, in November 2024, Zhou never arrived to pick them up. Then Simpson learned he hadn’t applied for a visa. She agreed to take the babies home until he could come retrieve them.
