To Fellow Makers: Great Things in Small Spaces!

Happy May! I recently read about “Me Made May” which is a "challenge throughout May where makers, sewers and crafters pledge to wear their handmade clothing more frequently or in new ways... aimed at fostering appreciation for handmade."

And although textiles are quite a different animal from wood, I love the idea of celebrating what we make.

You may have heard we’re accepting project entries for another Rockler Challenge; this one is extra dear to my heart. This year it is a Small Space Challenge, and considering I have been challenged with small spaces my whole adult life (I live in a 600 sq. ft. apartment) I have a lot of ideas and experience. 😉

You'll probably be able to tell by my poorly lit basement studio space where I shot my contribution to a video we put together introducing the Small Space Challenge.

In the video I mention my pencil post bed, which is big but, because of the hardware, very easy to move and store. But I was reminiscing about a few other projects as well, such as this table/desk that turns into a bench and is on casters (with a pencil drawer!). And think I’ve mentioned I'm (still) about to finish my own rendition of a Campaign-style chest that has a fold down writing desk and a hidden compartment. I just need to get back up to Ian Kirby in Connecticut.

I love multifunction and mobile everything! I'm a huge fan of anything that folds, knocks down and/or rolls! There are so many interesting hardware and joinery options that help large items become more compact and/or move.

And as mentioned last month, it's Dad and Grad season. I’ve been thinking about it as a 2nd Holiday season. A time to celebrate people and give and receive presents too! 😊 Thought it was time to refresh our Gift Guide page, check it out!
