ACLU Supporter, Today is the ACLU's Giving Day, and I want to take a moment to explain what your gift makes possible and why it's so important. Last month, I stood before the Supreme Court and argued in defense of our cherished constitutional guarantee of birthright citizenship, which dates back to the end of the Civil War. I was there to channel the voices of our clients – a nationwide class of children who would lose their citizenship under the Trump executive order – and an entire legal team. The Supreme Court argument was only the latest stage of litigation that began when we filed our first lawsuit just two hours after President Trump issued his lawless executive order. But we began to prepare for this litigation even earlier in 2024, as we planned for the contingency of a second Trump term. That advanced planning, and the hard work of ACLU lawyers around the country, made it possible for us to obtain the court orders that have prevented any child from losing their citizenship under Trump's order. Thanks to our litigation, birthright citizenship is safe – for now. As you can imagine, seeing a case like this through all the way to the Supreme Court takes an immense amount of resources – resources provided by generous supporters like you who are willing to invest in the defense of civil liberties and our Constitution. This is just one of the nearly 300 legal actions the ACLU has taken against this administration since President Trump took office for a second time–including 188 lawsuits. Importantly, we're not just fighting back – we're winning, with 64% of our cases delaying, diluting, or defeating the Trump administration's agenda. All of this –and more – is made possible by this community's generous contributions, ACLU Supporter. But with this administration's attacks on civil liberties only escalating, we certainly can't slow down now. Thank you,
Cecillia Wang |
