Hi ACLU Supporter – I've had enough – and I know you have, too. We've known about the Trump administration's depraved treatment of immigrants for a long time, but the issue reached a fever pitch last week. Millions of you helped bring light to atrocious news – like the policy of separating families and the utterly horrific abuse Border Patrol agents have committed against children. This is truly a moral crisis, and we need your help. That's why we're working with partners like United We Dream, National Domestic Workers Alliance, and Moms Rising to hold a National Day of Action today, June 1, to bring these children back to their parents. Because #FamiliesBelongTogether. It's as simple as that. ACLU Supporter, we need to seize this moment of public outrage: Call your senators NOW and demand they intervene to stop the Trump administration's cruel practice of family separation. No senator can be silent in the face of this atrocity. The Trump administration didn't think we'd find out about this, and they're misleading us. Last month, Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen said they only separate families at ports of entry when the relationship between parent and child cannot be confirmed. That's false. When ICE tore away the six-year-old daughter of Congolese asylum seeker Ms. L, they hadn't even tried to confirm their relationship. It seems they simply "couldn't" believe that a mother from a war-torn country would flee with her small child – even though that's what so many of our ancestors did to reach our borders. Like Ms. L and her child, many of these families are asylum seekers fleeing horrific violence for the dream of safety in the United States – and as asylum seekers, they're in this country to seek protections guaranteed by U.S. and international law that this administration is trampling. We can't let them down by allowing this shameful treatment to go on any longer. TODAY is the day: Tell your senators that we won't stand for the national disgrace that is family separation. If enough of us make our voices heard, we'll make this a politically toxic issue – and politicians can either listen to us, or face our wrath at the ballot box this fall. With your help, we can right this wrong. Thanks for keeping up the fight, Lee Gelernt Deputy Director of the ACLU Immigrants' Rights Project |
