Voters should choose their representatives, not the other way around. SCOTUS delivered a crushing blow to voting rights, but our fight to defend this foundational right is far from over. We will continue using every tool we have to ensure that every voice counts at the ballot box, but we're counting on YOU to fuel this critical work. |

ACLU Supporter, two weeks ago, in a devastating decision that will have a significant national impact, the Supreme Court struck down a Louisiana map that fairly represents Black voters, dealing a blow to a key provision of our country's core civil rights protection – Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. The result? The court is allowing states to invoke partisanship as an excuse to lock voters of color out of power and making it even more difficult to challenge discriminatory voting laws and practices. The impact? Redistricting is ongoing in many states, and the severe weakening of the VRA may affect future challenges to congressional, legislative, and local maps that dilute the voting strength of communities of color. In fact, in the time since the Court ruled, lawmakers have already jumped at the chance to carry out off-cycle redistricting and roll back hard-won fair representation. What now? Our fight is far from over, ACLU Supporter. In the past two weeks, we have been showing up in courts and in the streets across the South to tell politicians that Black voters deserve an equal voice in our democracy – in Tennessee, Louisiana, South Carolina, Alabama, and beyond. And with November's midterm elections coming up fast, we're already hard at work to shore up voting rights nationwide, ensure every voter has an equitable say at the polls, and shut down any attempt to suppress our voting power. We'll be continuing this mission-critical work in courtrooms, legislatures, and communities across the country. We're already doubling down on our work to stop voter suppression ahead of the midterms, but we need to double down on resources, too, and for that, we need you with us, ACLU Supporter.
Thank you so much, The ACLU Team |
