ACLU Supporter, President Trump is proposing a massive rule change that would result in widespread discrimination against transgender and intersex people who need to access domestic violence shelters and homeless shelters. His proposal would strip back a decade of progress for equal access – which is why we need your help. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is accepting public comment on this rule change for 60 days – and they're required by law to read through every single comment. So we're flooding HUD with messages demanding they protect equal access to housing.
For years, the Equal Access Rule has prevented discrimination in federally funded housing programs – including domestic violence shelters and homeless shelters. These facilities – and this rule – are life-saving. Transgender people are four times as likely to experience violence as their peers – and the vast majority of it is domestic violence. As a result of widespread discrimination, nearly one in three trans people has experienced homelessness in their lifetime. Having this legal protection ensures trans people are able to get help when they need it most. But President Trump's proposal would take away these critical protections, undoing that progress and potentially forcing HUD-funded shelter providers to turn away transgender or intersex people seeking emergency housing services. With thanks for all you do, Jessica Arons |
