ACLU Supporter, we just won a stay in Mahmoud Khalil's case – meaning the government can't redetain or deport him while his legal case proceeds to the Supreme Court. This is huge. The Trump administration has been doing everything in its power to try to silence Mahmoud Khalil explicitly because they disagree with his political views. We can't let this momentum pass us by.
The proceedings against Mahmoud have been a sham from the beginning. From arresting him without a warrant and shipping him to Louisiana, to adding pretextual charges after he filed his habeas case, the Trump administration is doing everything it can to make a chilling example out of him. Now, new evidence suggests the immigration judge and BIA might have already decided to order his deportation before Mahmoud ever had a chance to make his case. It couldn't be clearer: This isn't about immigration law, this is about attacking immigrants for their constitutionally-protected speech. While the stay Mahmoud was just granted is a win, we see the Trump administration's targeting for what it is: retaliation for expressing an opinion the government doesn't like. And if they can do it to Mahmoud, they can do it to any of us. Join us now in demanding justice for Mahmoud Khalil. Thanks for your action, The ACLU Team |
