Friend – Stop what you're doing and get your good headphones. Tony winner, creator of the hit musical Suffs, and NYCLU Artist Ambassador Shaina Taub has just dropped a powerful new song for the NYCLU in honor of immigrant New Yorkers.
I believe deeply that every justice movement needs songs we can march to, dance to, and sing out – and with this new version of her 2018 song 'Huddled Masses,' Shaina has given us the anthem for our times. This new arrangement by Allen René Louis and Ghreg Louis is a moving tribute to all those who've come here to make this country and New York their home. It's also a call to defend against the Trump administration's relentless assault on our people and our freedoms. With soloists Jenn Colella (Come from Away, Suffs) and Alex Joseph Grayson (Parade, The Outsiders), and featuring Broadway Inspirational Voices, the song is inspired by the Emma Lazarus sonnet 'The New Colossus.' Inscribed on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty to honor American immigrants, it reads, "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." Shaina and artists came together to inspire us to ask what more we can do for our immigrant neighbors and to urge state leaders to protect New York immigrants by passing the New York for All Act.
We are all part of this country's "Huddled Masses" and as the songs says, every one of us must "remember what I stand here for." Sincerely,
Donna Lieberman |
