In June 1775, George Washington realized that flying the closely related post-Revolutionary flag featuring a Union Jack in the corner was not a great confidence builder for their new country. On June 14, 1775, The Second Continental Congress passed a resolution that the US flag is thirteen red and white stripes with thirteen stars representing each state of the Union.
