PTTD brace: are you looking for the wrong features?

When you're dealing with ankle pain from Posterior Tibial Tendonitis (PTTD), a good brace can be a godsend. A wrong ankle brace, however, can hold you back from quick recovery. Here are the 5 things to look for:

Material: stretch is good for a snug fit, but you need enough structure to provide the support your sensitive tendon needs.
Construction: look for braces that are built specifically for PTTD. A generic, all-purpose brace tries to do everything, and doesn't do any of them very well. (Here are the design features to look for!)
Mobility: some PTTD "boots" are so high and rigid they completely immobilize your ankle. Unless your doctor prescribes you one, immobilizing your ankle isn't what you need. You need a design that unloads your injured tendon.
Wearability: breathable, machine-washable, low-profile brace means you can wear it whenever you need the support.
Height: an effective PTTD brace should have some height for support. A good rule of some is if the brace ends below the top of your shoe, it's probably not great for PTTD.

PTTD develops when the repetitive stress of your standing, walking, or running exceeds your ankle tendon's capacity to tolerate it.
