If you're not logging your trades, you're trading blind - here's how to change that
If you're not logging your trades, you're trading blind - here's how to change that
Most traders who struggle don't have a strategy problem. They have a review problem.
They take the same bad trades, in the same conditions, for the same reasons - week after week. Not because they are undisciplined, but because without a record, patterns are invisible. A trading journal fixes that.
What to log after every trade
You do not need elaborate software. A spreadsheet or a simple doc works. What matters is that you capture it consistently. After every trade, record:
- The instrument and direction (long or short)
- Your entry and exit price, and the time of day
- The setup - what did you see that made you take the trade?
- The result - profit, loss, or breakeven in points and percentage
- Your emotional state - were you calm, rushed, revenge trading?
- What you would do differently
|
That last point is the one most traders skip. It is also the most valuable.
|
|
How to review it
Logging is only half the work. The review is where the improvement happens.
Set aside time once a week - 20 to 30 minutes is enough - and look for patterns:
- Which setups are genuinely profitable for you, and which only feel like they should be?
- At what times of day do your best trades happen?
- Are your losses clustered around specific conditions - news events, low liquidity, specific sessions?
- Is your position sizing consistent, or do you size up when you are confident and down when you are unsure?
|
Most traders who do this honestly are surprised by what they find. The edge they thought they had is sometimes narrower than expected - and the real edge they have is often in places they had not looked.

Why it matters for your Alpha Capital evaluation
Evaluations test your ability to perform under defined rules, consistently. The traders who pass are not always the most technically gifted - they are the ones who understand their own behaviour under pressure. A journal builds that understanding faster than anything else.

|
Ready to put it into practice?
The best time to start a journal is before your next evaluation - not after. If you know your setups, you know your edge. If you know your edge, you are ready.
