There aren’t many activities I love more than walking down to my favorite local ice cream shop after dinner. As autumn arrives and evening temperatures enter chilly territory, I’d rather stay cozy at home. But the cones aren’t going anywhere, thanks to my trusty ice cream scoop.

This tool does just one job: serve ice cream. A good one will work wonders on everything from rich, dense vanilla ice cream to chunky coffee toffee crunch to firm raspberry sorbet. But what actually makes a great ice cream scoop?

Our winner from Zeroll is what all the pros use. Ask your local ice cream shop or just peek behind the counter, and I’d be willing to bet that that’s what they’re using to serve up picture-perfect scoops.

It’s made from aluminum and contains a food-grade mineral oil in the body, both of which help to conduct the heat from your hand to slightly soften the ice cream as you scoop. The head is also nice and round. These combined attributes help you to dig into frozen ice cream and seamlessly glide through it to form a beautiful sphere, with very little elbow grease required. The only downside is that you can’t put it in the dishwasher, but it takes just a couple seconds to wash by hand. This product has been around for almost a century, and I don’t think it’s going anywhere anytime soon.
