Football season is upon us which calls for one of my all–time favorite occasions: tailgating.
Sure, there’s the passing and the kicking and the whistles. But the fun really starts in the parking lot a few hours before the game. All you need is good food, a chair, a cooler full of refreshments, and tastefully rowdy company.
My friends and I have spent many football afternoons gathered in the stadium parking lot. On goes a tailgate-worthy playlist and out comes a refreshing beverage. We’ll often “kick off” the day with a big batch of
Bloody Marys or spicy
Micheladas. Something to whet our appetite while we get the game-day food ready.
Our tradition is to treat the feast potluck-style, or as we like to call it,
Slow Cooker Sundays. Everything from
barbecue ribs to
pulled pork to
mac and cheese. Perfect for keeping us full and warm on a crisp fall afternoon.
When the
portable grill ignites, it’s time for hot dogs. They’re handheld and the toppings are so customizable! I’ll often opt for simplicity:
sweet relish;
chili; or a bright, crisp grilled cucumber. (Seriously.)
Lately, though, I’ve been really into thinly sliced onions, spicy jalapeños, and cream cheese. It’s almost like a hot dog and jalapeño popper combo. They’re commonly referred to as
Seattle–style dogs, but they are so delicious . . .
. . . and I’m a Philly fan, so that’s saying a lot.
