Anastasia Miari is a travel and food journalist whose work celebrates the culinary legacies of Mediterranean grandmothers – including her own Yiayia. This September, she is launching a new YouTube series, LIVE LIKE A YIAYIA, in partnership with Ancient Greek Sandals. To celebrate, we went behind the scenes of the first episode, filmed in Corfu with her 90-year-old grandmother.

Pictured in Kardia, a simple sandal, Anastasia notes that her YiaYia ‘is one for leather, prioritising a timeless design, with comfort and quality that lasts.’ Anastasia continues: ‘My choices were obviously informed by my nineties upbringing in a Greek village on an island. The jellies are a nod to my childhood and are unequivocally linked to summer by the sea, reminding me of shoes my mother wore when I was a kid.’

Miari’s work celebrates Mediterranean matriarchs via three published books, which chronicle her travels, cooking with and interviewing the region’s grandmothers, preserving their stories, recipes and traditions for future generations.
