To Mat, or Not to Mat?

The mat is the border that sits between your art and the frame, and it is not just decoration. Knowing when to use one, and how to pick it, is the difference between a piece that looks framed and a piece that looks finished. Here is how to decide.

When to Use a Mat

Works on paper. Photos, prints, watercolors, diplomas, anything on paper almost always looks better matted. The border gives the eye somewhere to rest and makes the piece feel deliberate.

When you want to protect it. A mat holds the art off the glass, and that small gap matters. Art pressed against glass can stick, trap moisture, and get damaged over time. The mat is doing quiet conservation work while it looks good.

When the piece is small. A generous mat makes a little photo or print feel like a statement instead of an afterthought.

When the sizes do not line up. A mat lets you fit an odd-sized piece into a clean, standard frame without cropping anything.

When to Skip It

Canvas, oil, and acrylic. These are framed directly or floated, not matted. The texture is part of the art.

Posters and prints meant to fill the frame. If a piece is designed edge to edge, let it run.

When you want a modern, borderless look. Sometimes the frame alone is the whole statement.

How to Choose

Go wider than you think. A generous border, two to three inches or more, reads like a gallery instead of a store-bought frame. Give the art room to breathe.

Keep the color quiet. White, off-white, and soft neutrals let the art stay the focus. If you want a little more, a double mat with a thin accent color underneath adds depth without shouting.

Ask for acid-free. Anything you want to keep should be matted in conservation materials. Cheap mats yellow and can damage the art over the years.
