What to expect when you start wearing hearing aids

Hi there,

When you first receive new hearing aids, it can feel a little strange; your ears and brain simply need to get used to hearing in a new way.

As an audiologist, this is one of the most important things I tell patients: Hearing aids cannot restore your hearing to what it was before hearing loss. They are not a cure — they are an aid to help you communicate and hear sounds more clearly. Because of that, it's important to have realistic expectations, especially in the beginning.

For most people:

It takes at least two weeks to adjust to new hearing aids

Both the sound and the physical feel take time to get used to

•

The first days or weeks may feel a little "weird" — this is normal

You may notice sounds you haven't heard in a while, or feel more aware of background noise at first. That's actually a sign your hearing system is re-engaging with the world around you. Instead of aiming for perfection, we focus on progress.

Signs of improvement include:

Asking people to repeat themselves less often

•

Turning the TV volume down

•

Noticing soft sounds again, like birds chirping, footsteps, paper rustling, or the refrigerator humming

Give yourself grace during this process. Give yourself grace during this adjustment. No one becomes comfortable with hearing aids overnight — and you don't need to. We're not striving for perfect hearing—we're striving for better hearing.

And questions are expected, especially at the beginning. Connecting with a hearing specialist early can help you feel more confident and comfortable using your devices.
